Child Health

 Services Include:

Immunizations - Children
The following immunizations are provided free of charge to children - Diphtheria, Pertussis (whooping cough), Tetanus, Polio, Measles, Mumps, Rubella, Hib (prevents H. influenza meningitis), Varicella (chicken pox), Hepatitis B, and other immunizations are available. Services are provided daily.

Well & Sick Child Clinic
Services include physical exams, pre-school physicals, kindergarten physicals, developmental screening, immunizations, vision and hearing screening, and nutrition counseling services.

WIC - Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, & Children
Provides nutrition education and counseling, supplemental nutritious foods, and breastfeeding education and support for qualified children from birth to age 5.

Child Service Coordination
Infants and children up to age 5 years who have been identified with developmental and/or chronic health problems or who are at risk for such problems are offered Child Service Coordination. The family is assigned a social worker to ensure that the child receives appropriate health and education services and are referred to other supportive resources.

Prenatal Services

Stokes County Health Department offers a Prenatal Clinic to assure the availability of adequate prenatal care to Stokes County residents. This care includes patients who do not have private insurance or who are eligible for Medicaid. We want to be sure you get high quality care from your first trimester to your fourth trimester (postpartum period).

Our Health Center has experienced staff of friendly nurses along with doctors from Wake Forest Baptist Hospital. Our Prenatal Clinic operates on Tuesdays from 8:30am-5:00pm.

By providing professional, compassionate care in the Prenatal Clinic, the public health nurses work diligent to assure a healthy pregnancy for the expectant mother and her unborn child and they strive to make these special moments a rewarding experience.

Stokes County Health Department has so much more to offer to patients at our Prenatal Clinic. Example being, all maternity patients are provided with education throughout their pregnancy to help them understand what changes their bodies are going through and how to take the best care of themselves and their babies.

We have a Pregnancy Care Manager; upon referral you can be referred to these services to help you with support and many other resources that may be available to you.

The WIC Program provides healthy foods for good nutrition, more energy and strength, and a healthy baby. The WIC Program also provides breastfeeding support and promotion, as well as the services of a breastfeeding peer counselor.

To ensure a truly special parenting experience, preparations begin early in pregnancy and continue well after your baby is born to transition into our child health program.  We offer a complete range of services for expectant mothers and families.

Our prenatal education programs are designed to prepare you for the lifetime experience of parenting.

Get Prenatal Care as Early as Possible to Assure a Healthy Pregnancy

Prenatal care can significantly improve your chances of having a healthy pregnancy and a healthy baby. It is essential to get prenatal care as soon as you find out that you are pregnant and to keep all your appointments. Regular prenatal check-ups let you know how your baby is doing and can identify issues before they become bigger problems. You can come to Stokes County Health Department to have a pregnancy test done to see if you are pregnant. If you are pregnant then you will have the opportunity to receive prenatal care at our location as well. Stokes Family has a prenatal clinic on Tuesdays from 8:30am-5:00pm. We accept all patients whether or not you have insurance.

What to Expect

Please be prepared to discuss:

• Your general health
• What you eat
• Any allergies you may have
• Any medicines, herbs, vitamins and supplements you take
• Your family medical history
• About any previous pregnancies and any complications you may have had
• How you feel

Prenatal clinic appointments will be scheduled every four weeks until twenty seven weeks. At twenty-seven weeks the appointments will be scheduled every two weeks until 36 weeks. Starting at 36 weeks the prenatal appointments will be scheduled each week until delivery.

These visits are an excellent time for you and your loved ones to ask questions. Please write them down ahead of time so you won't forget.
